Tips for Searching

You can search for any words, phrases, or a date.

Please bear in mind that the search looks for exact phrases. For example, if you search for Anna Seward then you wouldn’t get any results where the poet is listed as Seward, Anna or any records that simply include Seward. So to get the best results, search for a single word, and then use the ‘search within the results’ box to narrow your search down.

To see more information about an object, click on the record number to enter the ‘Detail’ view.

You can search by types of objects too – search for ‘painting’ or ‘letter’ for example.

You can see the entire database by clicking ‘run search’ when the box is empty.

Please contact us at sjmuseum@lichfield.gov.uk if you require any assistance with the online search. We hope that you enjoy using our collection search.

Welcome to our collection search

The Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum has a collection of over 8,000 items including fine art, furniture, books, manuscripts and archive material relating to Johnson and his time, as well as the history of Lichfield. Our libraries include many early and association copies of works by Johnson and his circle.   We hope that you enjoy exploring our collection. Please see our tips for searching to help you get started.

Our collection database was built with years of work, much of it by our dedicated volunteers. It is a working tool for the Museum and will be regularly updated. The whole collection is included here already, but images and additional information will regularly appear. If you need any help using our catalogue, or if you spot any errors, then please get in touch with us at sjmuseum@lichfield.gov.uk. Please visit our main website  for information on making an appointment to use the collections.
